Andrew Tate’s Meta Ban isn’t the only exciting news for women’s safety
A few weeks ago, I was walking to my car around 4am after finishing work, and I was followed by a stranger. Usually, I’m fairly confident walking alone at night having worked in my industry for 9 years, but when I walked into the carpark stairwell which I knew didn’t have security cameras, and the person behind me started screaming, I freaked out. I’d reached my hands into my bag and grabbed my keys so I could run straight into my car.
When I got in my car, I was thinking about how I should add something to my keys that would help me feel safer next time. On the drive home, I was thinking about finding a discrete knife to add to my keys (yes, I know it’s not legal, but sometimes you have to do what is necessary when you’re not safe.) Then, I came across a variety of self defense and safety tools that can be added to a keychain, and decided I’d buy myself some in the morning (well, technically the next afternoon when I woke up). But as I lied in my bed, I couldn’t help but think of how many other women had probably wished they had something like this to protect them. So, in true Tiyana fashion I wasted no time setting up a website and contacting a manufacturer (you might call it productivity, but it was really PhD procrastination!)

Realising that she probably wasn’t the only person who was tired of feeling unsafe while out in the community, she decided to set up an initiative under the Humanitarian Changemakers Network, offering safety keys to Australians. As part of the Humanitarian Changemakers Network, Safeguardwomen.org promotes a wholistic approach to formal and informal changes at the individual/collective and systemic levels.
If you, or someone you know is tired of not feeling safe while out in the community, our safety keys feature a personal alarm, window breaker, whistle, and other practical tools like a hand sanitiser case, lip balm holder, bottle opener, and a cute pom pom. It’s the perfect self-defense tool to carry on the go!
We know that the burden of responsibility shouldn’t be on individuals to ensure their own safety, but unfortunately, that’s still the world we live in. That’s why here at Safeguard Women, we offer tools for women & other at-risk groups to feel safe while out and about in the community, and donate the proceeds from all sales to fund local and national projects that promote whole-systems change & empower women here in Australia & beyond.
Each set includes:
- Wrist Strap
- Lipbalm Holder
- Sanitser pouch
- Personal Safety Alarm with LED Light
- Seatbelt Cutter
- Safety Stick / window breaker
- Safety key (knife)
- Knuckle tool
- Bottle opener
